A geological survey conducted by the British Geological Survey (BGS) has identified significant concentrations of rare earth elements in seafloor nodules just off the coast of the Outer Hebrides.
The findings suggest that these deposits could potentially provide a domestic source of critical materials needed for wind turbines and electric vehicle motors, reducing reliance on global imports.
"This is a purely scientific discovery at this stage," cautioned the lead geologist. "The environmental challenges of deep-sea extraction are immense and must be the primary consideration before any commercial talk begins."
Environmental groups have already expressed concern, calling for a moratorium on exploration until the impact on marine ecosystems is fully understood.
