The NHS waiting list in England has fallen below seven million for the first time since early 2024, according to the latest data from NHS England, marking a significant milestone in the government's pledge to tackle the post-pandemic backlog.
The reduction has been driven by a combination of increased surgical capacity, extended operating hours, and the deployment of 160 new community diagnostic centres across the country. Elective procedures rose by 14 per cent year-on-year.
"Every number on that list is a person in pain or anxiety," said the Health Secretary. "We are making real, measurable progress — but we won't stop until every patient receives timely care."
Despite the improvement, charities including the King's Fund have cautioned that average waiting times remain significantly above pre-pandemic levels, with cancer referrals and mental health services facing particular strain.
