The historic glass-making hub of Sheffield has secured £500 million in combined public and private funding to launch the 'Green Forge' project, aimed at converting the region's industrial furnaces to low-carbon electricity and hydrogen.
Glass production is one of the most energy-intensive industries in the UK. The project will see the installation of new hybrid furnaces that can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional gas-fired models.
"Sheffield is redefining its industrial heritage for the 21st century," noted the city's lead industrial strategist. "We are proving that you can have heavy industry and net-zero simultaneously."
The project is expected to safeguard over 1,500 jobs and position the UK as a global leader in sustainable glass manufacturing technology.
